Afra's Teaching Services

Afra is available as a workshop teacher. A qualified adult educator with over 18 years experience as a teacher, she can offer workshops in a wide range of MED forms. Afra is particularly known for her interpretative/experimental style, and her use of props. Workshops with Afra are always great fun, full of useful information. Hard work too - but worth it! Her aim is not just to teach a collection of steps or a choreography by rote, but to give the student the tools and inspiration to create dances of their own, in their own style.

Afra does not teach weekly classes!

You can book Afra as a guest star at your haflah or show, or for one of her lectures on dance styles, dance history and music. Lectures include notes and involves the use of videos. You can while away an evening (or afternoon) watching videos with informative commentary from Afra - great fun and full of interesting information about the stars of past and present. (Please note that Afra regrets that she is unable to take bookings for events that also feature burlesque).

Afra is a trained make-up artist with extensive photographic and stage/performance make-up experience. Her make-up workshops are full of practical advice and useful tips for all types of dancer from the professional to those just dancing for fun.

Normally if requested, Afra will include a single performance at a haflah or studio performance connected with a workshop event as part of the workshop fees. There is an additional fee if you would like her to dance more than once (with a costume change) which is based on how many numbers you would like her to perform.

Private Lessons - Afra is able to offer private lessons in both her home town and also before/after workshops & performance engagements. All bookings are by prior arrangement. Contact Afra for details of fees and availability.

International Engagements - If you wish to engage Afra to teach or perform outside of the UK one-off fees or special packages can be agreed – ask for more information. Please note that US engagements normally need to be made a minimum of 6 months ahead of time and European engagements a minimum of 3 months ahead but can be arranged a short notice if necessary.

Afra is a very busy dancer and teacher, if you wish to arrange for her to come and teach or perform at your event, check with her for dates as soon as possible. Her diary fills up very quickly (she already has dates for 2011!), so early booking is essential to avoid disappointment.

NOTE: Afra is unavailable for engagements outside of the UK during the 4 weeks running up her annual dance festival - Celebrating Dance

Workshops in a wide range of dance styles. Afra has 30 years experience in the field of Middle Eastern Dance. Some of the workshops available are: Modern Egyptian, Dance Styles from the Golden Age of Egyptian cinema, Melaya Lef, Modern & Traditional Baladi, Egyptian Folk, Modern Interpretative (also known as fusion), the Art of Improvisation, Floorwork, Experimental Style, fun combinations, technique and posture. Afra can also offer workshops in Zambra Mora, 'Gypsy' Fantasy/Fusion and Khaleeji.

Afra is the UK's expert on Wings of Isis and she also offers workshops with the following props - Sword & Double Sword, Shammodan, Cane, Single/Double Veil, Dancing with Silk Veils, Dancing with extra large veils, Dancing with a Fan, Dancing with veil fan, Dancing with a Tambourine. She has a range of fun choreographies in styles such as Egyptian Pop/Classical, Drum solos and Spanish/Zambra Mora Fusion amongst others.

Workshops on Performance Skills and Stagecraft. Afra is an experienced entertainer who has performed in many different environments. In these workshops dancers learn how to develop their skills to perform and entertain in a variety of different situations. Material covered can include; performance skills (entrances & exits for instance), adding character and emotional depth to your performances, making a connection with the audience, learning how to critique your own performance and dance skills, combining movement and music to make the body 'sing'. Afra has developed her own technique for improving stage presence and dynamics which will bring a whole new level to your dancing.

Workshops on Stage and Performance Make Up. Afra is a very experienced Theatre, TV & Film Make-Up Artist, who specialises in photographic and performance make-up. Workshops combine practical and theory on how to make the most of your looks for different dance situations. A great way to spend afternoon or evening - playing with make-up! This is a popular subject for workshops that are followed by a haflah - by the end of the session students are wearing make-up that will have them ready for performing and partying!

There is a minimum and maximum number of people that Afra is prepared to teach in any single workshop, please ask for more details when enquiring about her availability. Minimum teaching time is 4 hours which can be split into individual workshops.
